We are often contact by supporters who want to sell their stocks and donate the money to Central Ohio Youth for Christ. While we always appreciate any donation, we tell them that there is a way to donate stocks and realize a better tax benefit.
Rather than selling the stocks first, we suggest you donate the stocks directly to COYFC.
Giving stocks (that you have held for more than one year) directly to a ministry provides several advantages:
- you avoid capital gains tax
- you receive a deduction at the full-market value of the securities
- it simplifies your giving
