Donate Your Car to Charity in Columbus, Ohio

post

Let’s face it, we grow attached to our cars. Which makes disposing of them a bit more difficult than we imagined it ever might be. If you donate your car to Central Ohio Youth for Christ, we make it easy for you — and very rewarding for area youth.

Equip Auto Sales is a ministry division of Central Ohio Youth for Christ. Our team at Equip Auto Sales will pick up your donated car at no charge – even if it needs to be towed. Our mechanics repair it, then put it on the auto lot for sale. When you donate your car, you will receive a tax receipt for the sale price. And all profits help COYFC’s automotive repair training program for local teens.

Donate your car to Equip Auto Sales: How this program is different

Our car donation program is unique! Equip Auto Sales is affiliated with the Equip Skills Center, an outgrowth of Central Ohio Youth for Christ. This Skills Center allows for mentoring and training by trained volunteer-vetted mechanics. Cars from Equip Auto Sales fund this program – generating income to support the training program at both Equip Skills Center locations (Franklinton and North Columbus).

The proceeds from the sale of your generously donated vehicle directly benefit Central Ohio Youth for Christ’s automotive training program for underserved youth. When you donate your car, you’re making a difference in a youth’s life. All classes are held at Central Ohio Youth for Christ’s Equip Skills Center locations in Linden and Franklinton.

Local students learn skills when you donate your car

When you donate your car, students benefit from these program offerings:

A six-week Introductory class offers basic hands-on automotive skills at five specialized repair and instructional stations. These skills include:

  • an oil change
  • basic maintenance
  • wheel and brake work
  • electrical updates
  • small engine fixes

Students are timed at four of the five stations (not oil change) and are quizzed weekly on tool and part names/functions.

A similar-in-length Intermediate I class helps teens explore if they want to be a mechanic through a career assessment.  When you donate your car, the funds raised provide students with the opportunity to completely disassemble and reassemble a small engine.

A 24-week Intermediate II class teaches the major automotive systems:

  • electrical
  • fuel
  • air intake and exhaust
  • cooling
  • braking
  • steering and suspension

The class covers how each subsystem works, what components are in the subsystem, how to locate the components on vehicles, and remove and replace the major components.

Donate your car and provide advanced learning opportunities for youth

An Advanced class includes students working alongside Equip Auto Sales mechanics repairing cars. Students learn how to:

  • inspect vehicles
  • diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle failures
  • how to repair those vehicle failures.

Students also do project work and complete the class with an internship at a local auto repair location.

Additionally, a detailing class is offered to students. This class supports youth who may not have the aptitude, patience, or desire to repair them, but they still love cars and want to work around them and take care of them. They learn how to deep clean vehicles inside and out and convert them back into a showroom condition. When you donate your car, students at levels are equipped with real life mechanic skills.

You’d like to donate your car to Central Ohio Youth for Christ. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions:

Is it worth it to donate my car?

Sometimes cars seem beyond repair or lacking any reasonable value. Owners often wonder if we would want cars like this. We do. Even significantly damaged, inoperable, or aged cars have scrap value that make them worth something to us.

What will my tax deduction be worth if I donate my car?

Cars worth $500 and under: May be deducted for the amount of your declared value up to $500.

Cars worth $501 and over: We resell “as is” = actual resale amount. We will send you a receipt letter when the car sells which will let you know the amount of the sale for deduction.

Cars we repair before resale: If significant improvements are made, once a determination has been made to do so, you will receive a tax-receipt letter informing you of the selling price and explaining how you can claim an income tax deduction for your charitable donation.

What if I can’t find my title?

You can get a duplicate title for your car at the title office. Alternatively, you may contact us and we’d be happy to arrange for a duplicate title.

Will every donated car be repaired?

No. Some cars are worth fixing and/or deemed unsafe to resell. In those instances the vehicles are stripped for parts then recycled for scrap. If you donate your car, it will still be a valuable contribution to the program.

I want to donate my car, how do I get my car to you?

For your convenience, we can come to you and pick it up. We will provide free towing for your car if necessary.
